WASHINGTON – The Federal Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first-ever prescription drug to treat arthritis pain.
The drug, called Celebrex, is an anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
The FDA also approved the first prescription-only drug to treat the condition called “acute gout” after it was found to cause cancer in patients after taking it for a year or more.
Celebrex was the first drug to be approved by the FDA for treating arthritis pain in patients who had been on the drug for longer than a year.
“Celebrex is an effective medication for the management of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in patients who have had an arthritic joint disease or who are undergoing a radical arthroplasty,” said the FDA’s Office of Drugs and Technologies in the U. S., which is based in the U. S. A total of 34 drugs have been approved by the agency, including Celebrex.
Celebrex is available in four dosages, with dosages two to eight hours apart and the maximum dose is 100 milligrams. The maximum dosages of Celebrex for rheumatoid arthritis are 200 milligrams and 400 milligrams.
The drug’s active ingredient, celecoxib, is the same in all dosages.
The drug is available as a generic-to-OTC-packaged version, and can be compounded by mail-order pharmacies to be shipped directly to consumers in the U. The FDA will begin reviewing the drug’s approved applications and other issues in late-stage clinical trials.
Celebrex has been available in the U. since 2000, and the drug is currently on the U. pharmacy shelves.
Celebrex is typically prescribed to patients who have osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or other conditions that interfere with bone growth and hardening, which can cause pain and stiffness in muscles.
Celebrex works by blocking pain signals sent by the spinal cord that cause blood vessels to tighten and become inflamed. This causes a patient’s body to swell and painful symptoms can occur.
For patients whose condition causes pain, Celebrex can also reduce inflammation, which can be caused by high doses of the drug.
Celebrex is generally safe when used as directed by a doctor and in patients who are well-controlled on other medications, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
In some patients, Celebrex can cause serious side effects, including anaphylactic reactions.
